Unique, handmade black and white film on traditional Japanese Washi paper. Thanks to the paper texture, the photographs enlarged from these negatives look like the works of pictorialists.

Description

The light-sensitive layer is applied to high-quality Kozo paper (a type of Japanese paper made from mulberry fibres).

It has a parchment-like, semi-transparent character and is extremely stable, flexible and strong.

Images made from Washi film also have a paper-like texture, with the cinema format this effect is naturally stronger than with medium format films because there is a greater ratio of enlargement of the parchment texture.

The gradation of the film is very contrasting.

This orthochromatic film has a base sensitivity of 25 ISO (when developed in Tetenal Eukobrom positive developer at 1:1 dilution). It is sensitive to the blue end of the light spectrum and insensitive to the red end. This means that Washi films can be developed under red safety light (> 545nm).

The film comes from a small French production, is handmade and requires to be handled gently throughout the process. Washi paper has been produced in Japan for several centuries due to its excellent properties.

It is highly sensitive to the blue part of the light spectrum, less sensitive to the green and insensitive to the red part. Those qualities are best suited for portrait, still life and urban photography.

Only a traditional developing method or a good quality scanner will reveal the potential that lies within this film.

Our tips:

As this is a high contrast film, accurate exposure is important.

For portraiture, meter the exposure directly on the subject.

Its qualities are most apparent when shooting less contrasting scenes.

It is ideal for use in pinhole cameras. Its light-sensitive emulsion is similar to that used for photo paper, so the long exposures needed for pinhole cameras are not a problem.

During the early era of silent film, film materials were sensitive to blue light, known as orthochromatic. Hollywood relied on cosmetics to "correct" the appearance of actors on screen. Now, the very "imperfections" that plagued our predecessors have become the artistic characteristics that define contemporary orthochromatic films. High silver content and...
