Wetting agents for black and white photography

Wetting agents are auxiliary chemicals used in the final stage of processing black and white films and photographic paper. Their main purpose is to reduce the surface tension of water so that, after the final wash, water runs evenly off the material and does not dry in the form of droplets, streaks or stains.

What a wetting agent is used for

• final rinse of films and photographic paper
• even drainage of water from the emulsion surface
• reduction of dried droplets, streaks and stains
• cleaner drying without the need for mechanical wiping

Darkroom use

A wetting agent is used as the final bath after development, stop bath, fixing and thorough washing. It is the last step before drying film or photographic paper and helps achieve a cleaner result with a lower risk of water marks.

Extended practical use

Selected products are also used in practice outside the darkroom, especially where even wetting of a surface and drying without streaks or dried droplets is important. This may include cleaning glass, optical elements, smooth plastic surfaces and other technical or hobby applications. Some users also apply wetting agents when cleaning vinyl records. However, suitability for such use should always be assessed according to the specific product and its composition.

Differences between products

Individual wetting agents may differ in concentration, recommended dilution, bottle size and additional properties. Some products are intended strictly for photographic processing, while others may offer further features in addition to the wetting function, such as image stabilization.
